SPORTS IN THE INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT

CRICKET AS A SPORTS

Key attributes of any sports / game / outdoor activity that need must always be given a thought, are : -

a) recreational quotient index of the same activity,

b) as a - whole or partial body, etc. exercise i.e. regimen to keep fit & sturdy.
Whether the activity provides for this opportunity, fully, in itself ?

c) the spirit inherent in the same activity ( in terms of - Team, leadership, mutual cohesion and spirit of selfless co-ordination, etc. ). Team Bonding inculcation / role.

d) the duration of the same activity. The practicality of the same.

e) level of involvement or inclusiveness of the individual. Or individual's role as in a team - as an individual or a collective team.  At any instance of time this must be accounted for.

These are some of the key points to ponder. There might be many other.

So, how does cricket measure up ? vis-a-vis other sports ? Say, football, hockey, wrestling, boxing, kabaddi, kho-kho, etc.

Well... instead of someone else telling ... please, do seek your own answers.

NOW...
FEW QUESTIONS ARE IN ORDER, HERE : -

A) Is cricket a suitable sport for the masses or is it more suitable for a region where the population mass index is low ? i.e. sparsely or moderately populated areas ?
With open grounds not in short supply ?

Did cricket start of as a game played by the Britishers and later on by the Rajahs and the Princes, in the sub-continent ?

Wherein, the Britishers would bat and the underlings would throw ball and field.
Whilst the Britishers derived psychological triumph when they smashed the ball ? :) Just kidding.

Is it that only common-wealth countries play this game ? As a vestige of the imperial past ?

B) What proportion of the masses, esp. kids and young men / women get access to a proper sports ground ? Say - cricket or football field, in INDIA ?

C) Is cricket the best of sports, given the density of our population ?
Consider - Rural, semi-urban, urban, metro, cosmopolitan

     population segment.

D) Is this a game that can be played by all and sundry ?

Is it that one has to BE FIT TO PLAY THIS GAME ? I guess so.

WHEREAS, an ideal game ought to be one that can be "engaged

in" irrespective of one's physical makeup.

As and when one keeps on playing the same sports - by exercising his / her muscles one gains improved physical and mental well-being, over a period of time.
This implies - more & more physical fitness every succeeding day of play.

E) Is cricket suitable given our tropical climate ? In this part of the world ?
Throughout the year i.e. in any / ALL the climates ? In any / all parts of the country ?

Can we not play soccer, hockey, etc. in any / all climates to some or great extent ?
Whether it rains or chills or is piping hot outside does not deter the players much !
Might be all fun for them !

The actual game, here, can be over in an hour or two, at most.
Wherein cricket takes half or full day. ( Forget T20, that's a recent phenomenon. )

With any game the participation index of the population MUST dramatically go up.

Even the sports grounds, in major towns / cities, can be affordably allotted to different set of players throughout the day. Once a set of players tires out after the play. They can move off and the ground can be easily see yet another team, for greater ground utilization. Better time slicing i.e. time management.

F) Given the density of the population, esp. in urban areas - do the masses get the opportunity to play any other sports or even cricket while there's an active practice session going on ? Or, even while

an active match is on going ? This lasts weeks or months !

G) Why do we have a game that engages a great part of the ground ? Time consuming sport that  can at MOST be played by a set of ONLY 10-12 players ? Others are made idle watchers.

DO we need to promote MORE OF - FOOTBALL, HOCKEY, Kabaddi, Wrestling, etc. rather than CRICKET !

Is cricket more of a recreation rather than a full fledged sports ?

How does cricket measure as a sports or games ?
How do we quantify its' effect on our body, mind and spirit vis-a-vis the other games ?
Why it never appealed to the Americans ( say ) ? Of whom, all of us are in awe for their unsurpassed ingenuity, etc. ?

How do we define a sports ?
Does playing cricket result in all round physical and mental wellness / well-being ?

QUESTION -
Role of IPL during the election times. Is it preplanned to coincide with the general elections ? The role of IPL cheer leaders.

A WAGER -
I hope someone perceptive enough builds up on these set of initial thoughts and comes up with a comprehensively well outlined, well organized, free-flowing set of thoughts on cricket as a sports, in the Indian sub-continent's context.
The matter and spirit of THIS post MUST be surpassed. I say - this post be belittled to drive home those very points that I could have failed to put across as punch-liners.

In that case, even that makes me proud of my effort to pen my random thoughts down here.

Thanks !
